The Soul and Body Lab system integrates traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine and is founded on nine pillars. While each pillar represents a distinct realm of health, they are all interconnected and influence one another. This interconnectedness means we always assess and work on all nine pillars. Additionally, we consider factors that may be relevant but don’t fit directly into these nine pillars, such as genetics. For women, we can also tailor your training and nutrition to your menstrual cycle and address the challenges of menopause if necessary. Keep scrolling for a brief introduction to each pillar.
This is the central, most important pillar in the Soul and Body Lab system. Our entire physiology revolves around our breathing. The breathing motion is the primordial movement from which optimal visceral, vascular, and musculoskeletal health arises. You can only be as healthy as your breath. We assess the biochemical, biomechanical, and psychological aspects of breathing, and how they influence one another, but we mainly focus on the biomechanical dimension, using Head to Tail breathing to regulate pressure, balance the neuromuscular system, and bring the spine back into coherence.
Whether you are looking to rehabilitate an injury, are a high-performance athlete seeking specialised strength and conditioning, or simply want to lead a less sedentary lifestyle, at Soul and Body Lab we always start by addressing the foundations. This involves viewing the body through the lens of evolutionary neurobiology and understanding that the first step in our development is establishing a stable, decompressed midline. This is primarily achieved through practising Head to Tail breathing while activating the different ventral/dorsal body polarities that Traditional Chinese Medicine channel theory teaches us about.
Neurosomatics focuses on the role of the nervous system in regulating physiological functions. Whether due to emotional or physical trauma, sub-optimal development, or chronic stress, neurological dysfunction is increasingly common nowadays. At Soul and Body Lab, we recognise the critical role of your cranial nerves in the neurological hierarchy, ensuring they are activated and balanced. We also consider the interrelationship between the Central Nervous System, Peripheral Nervous System, and Autonomic Nervous System, and examine how sensation calibrates the brain’s map of the body. Our approach blends conventional neuroscience with traditional Chinese medicine theory and modern research on Acupuncture.
Although it is impossible to separate the two, Neurosomatics can be likened to the hardware of our mind, while Psychosomatics represents the software, the less tangible and measurable part of our mind. Psychosomatics is all about the identity we have formed, and the two-way relationship between our physical pain and our limbic system (“how” we perceive ourselves). Akin to the other pillars, we address this pillar through a blend of modern research and time-tested 5-element Chinese medicine theory.
Making small changes in your dietary habits can transform your health. At Soul and Body Lab, we understand that each person has a unique metabolism, microbiome, and genetics, resulting in distinct nutritional needs. That’s why we conduct different assessments to learn about you and tailor our recommendations accordingly. With our coaching, you’ll gain insights into how your body responds to different foods and identify any that might be causing issues. You’ll also discover how various superfoods and nutritional supplements can target specific health markers, helping you attain your goals, whether that’s detoxification, weight loss, or muscle hypertrophy.
Not all water is equal. The quality of the water you consume significantly impacts all physiological processes. High-quality water, free from contaminants such as heavy metals, chlorine, and microplastics, can enhance nutrient absorption, healthy skin, digestion, and cognitive/metabolic functions. At Soul and Body Lab, we recommend various filters and products to improve the purity and molecular structure of your tap water, if you don’t have access to a natural spring. We also recommend the best bottled water options in your local supermarket, based on the latest lab tests available.
Beyond just the quantity of sleep, we focus on enhancing the quality and consistency of sleep patterns for better health and performance. We assess various factors that influence circadian health, including light exposure, meal timing, bedtime, and the sleeping environment. Additionally, we also explore methods to improve overall rest and recovery, such as stress management and nutritional supplements.
The environment’s impact on our health is multifaceted, involving factors such as temperature, moisture (or lack thereof), environmental toxins (both natural and artificial), and electromagnetic radiation, to name a few. By addressing and optimising these factors, we aim to create a supportive atmosphere that promotes physical and mental well-being, contributing to the health of our internal environment in the long run.
We often overlook our relationship with society or the “tribe,” along with sociocultural and sociopolitical norms, when trying to make sense of our mental health. As humans, socialising is more of a necessity than a luxury and is a crucial part of our regulatory mechanisms. The quality of our relationships is a direct measure of our health. In other words, we often mirror each other, becoming reflections of our immediate social environment, for better or for worse. Furthermore, expression lies at the forefront of our psycho-emotional health, and sometimes learning to be assertive or more vulnerable with others can be exactly what we need to feel safe and empowered. Soul and Body Lab coaching takes all of this into account, and in addition to exploring the interpersonal, we also consider the transpersonal aspect of the human experience.
